Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the Labour Law Commission!

It is with great honour that I accepted chairing the Labour Law Commission and I am sure this will be a particularly productive year for us all.

The time is for change and growth in the world, with all the related challenges arising for the rule of law and labour implications upon us.

The exchange of ideas and the discussion of new topics, at the heart of the UIA, are ever more important in this context. Therefore, we are encouraging a strong, dynamic commission, with new projects and ideas and fresh contributions.

Last year’s congress in Porto was a great success and this year’s 63rd UIA Congress in Luxembourg will undoubtfully be a renewed opportunity to grow our businesses and share knowledge and experiences. It will take place from November 6 to 10, 2019 and its main themes will be “Innovation and the Law: Where Passion Meets Reason” and “Doing Business in Respect of Human Rights”. The working sessions of our Commission, inspired on those themes, will in principle discuss the “gender diversity” and “artificial intelligence and mediation”. We may also debate the theme related to “religious freedom”.

The commission will also organise, jointly with the Criminal Law Commission, a seminar on the topic "Corporate Compliance and Internal Investigations – The Role of External an In-House Counsel”, composed of seven different panels over one and a half days, which will be held on September 12 and 13, 2019.

Our Mid-Year Meeting will also take place in Milan, and is scheduled for May 9-10, 2019. Its working session, to be held on May 10, will be mainly dedicated to the preparation of the themes of the Luxembourg Congress, the debate on the labour issues currently discussed in the different jurisdictions.

Those who join the group will not only benefit from the considerable expertise of its members, but also, as you may see from what is mentioned above, new members will also be involved in the social functions of the Labour Law Commission.

We are counting on you all to ensure a strong and renewed Labour Commission.

Best wishes,

Acácio Pita Negrão
Chairman for the UIA Labour Commission
