The International Arbitration Commission is comprised of lawyers practising in various jurisdictions who are engaged in international commercial arbitration and international investment arbitration.

The Commission’s focus primarily centres on the development of international arbitration law and, in particular, new trends in arbitration law and practice.

The Commission also pays particular attention to the interaction of its subject matter with other areas of law, working in co-operation with other commissions to that end.

The Commission’s work is directed by a Steering Committee with six members from different jurisdictions: Laurence Kiffer, Patricia Ann Peterson, Veit Oehlberger, Andrea Carlevaris, Jane Willems and Álvaro López de Argumedo Piñeiro.

In addition to an annual programme at each UIA Congress, the International Arbitration Commission frequently organizes and participates in UIA seminars on international arbitration and related topics.

The last congress took place in Luxembourg from 6 to 10 November 2019. The session of the commission took place on 7 November 2019 and dealt with the greater role of EU law on arbitration, both on commercial arbitration and investment arbitration.
The session was organized with two panels which deal respectively with issues in connection with each of these two types of arbitration.

In the panel on commercial arbitration the speakers discussed the following topics: Brussels regulation and arbitration, arbitration antisuit injunctions and EU law as well as mandatory EU provisions prevailing over arbitration conventions.

The panel on investment arbitration discussed the following topics: the new dispute resolution system chosen by Europe in its recent trade agreements, the enforceability of intra-EU investment awards and the reforms driven by Europe to address issues of consistency, coherence and predictability on investment arbitration awards.

The internal meeting of the commission took place on 7 November 2019 before the session and prepared the program of the UIA 2020 Congress in Guadalajara.
