A Road to Human Rights Due Diligence - Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Corruption, Environmental Protection and more -
#UIATokyo
Seminar presented by the UIA and Tokyo Bar Association in collaboration with Japan Federation of Bar Associations
Please join us for a series of fundamental and practical discussions to discuss new legal trends in Europe to protect global interests in the 21st Century. We will be joined by panelists from both Asia and Europe.
Impacts of the EU Human Rights Due Diligence Directive are significant even in Asia, including Japan. The EU Directive would require EU Member States to transpose into national law a corporate due diligence duty to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for adverse human rights and environmental impacts. The duty would apply to a business company’s own operations, its subsidiaries and their supply chains. In other words, the EU Directive will have strong impacts not only in Europe but in Asia, including Japan.
What is the purpose of the EU Directive and why is it needed? Why must a non-EU company be compelled to obey the EU Directive? A possible answer is that the interests to be protected by the Directive are global ones, such as is the case of anti-money laundering, anti-corruption and environmental protections.
The panel of experts will address the Directive and its implications for application beyond Europe, including Asia, and will provide best practices for lawyers in the 21st century advising multinational business clients.
The seminar will be held on Thursday, March 21 and March 22 in Tokyo and will include a cocktail reception and Gala Dinner in the evening of March 21. An excursion to Kamakura, the old capital of Japan established by Samurai will be organised on Sunday, March 24.
We look forward to seeing you in Tokyo!
