Le droit alimentaire, un sujet traité par le nouveau groupe de travail
Proposal for the establishment of a new UIA working group on food law
by Stefano Dindo
Being inspired by the subject of Expo in Milan (the Planet, Energy for life), the UIA editorial committee has decided to produce a special issue of the journal Juriste International, dedicated to food law, which has been distributed to all members .
In addition to that, UIA at Expo collaborated in the organization of a seminar on "Wine, the Heritage and the Territory", in Milan on May 8th 2015, in the main hall of the Palace of Justice Milan with 350 attendees. The seminar has been organized by the Milan Bar Association in cooperation with the Unione Giuristi della Vite e del Vino, the University of Milan Bicocca and the UIA.
As a result of the interest these initiatives have aroused, there have been talks concerning setting up a working group on food law, which is a specific field that could nevertheless amount to a very interesting venture for lawyers.
It is a subject with interdisciplinary aspects that could concern several commissions already established within UIA: for example, the contracts, intellectual property, biotechnology, EU law, international sale of goods commissions and probably others. There are many interesting topics that can be discussed such as, inter alia, trademarks and quality certification, tort law and product liability in the agrifood sector, distribution contracts in agrifood markets, consumer protection in the agrifood sector, export of agrifood products, specific legislation such as wine law etc.
A working session has consequently been organized at the Congress of Valencia on October 30th for the discussion of the following subjects:
Food law: what is the lawyer’s role in assisting the client? The protection of food products by means of designations of origin and geographical Indications: just how effective are these? Trademarks and quality certification in food law. Designation of origin, protection and the Agreement between the EU and the USA on wine trade; Combatting the faking of food products: an overview.
Those who are interested are welcome to attend to the session on food law in Valencia. Let’s see if all together we can start a new adventure.
