UIA President attends the Law Society of Hong Kong's Opening of the Legal Year

Stephen L. Dreyfuss participated in the Opening of the Legal Year of the Law Society of Hong Kong on January 13. As part of the celebrations, the Law Society had organised two official visits – one to the Legislative Council and the other to the Department of Justice of Hong Kong.

These two meetings enabled representatives of Bars and professional lawyers' organisations such as UIA to better understand how the special administrative region of Hong Kong’s government is organised.

In the afternoon of the same day, a Presidents' Round Table was held and discussed the possible avenues of collaboration between international organisations to enable them to speak with one, strong voice in favour of the legal profession; this was followed by a discussion on young lawyers – the future pillars of the profession.

In his address on the first theme, Stephen L. Dreyfuss laid emphasis on the need to communicate better with the authorities so as to defend the profession’s lofty principles, as well as to communicate better vis-à-vis citizens so that the latter are able to view lawyers as protectors of their rights.

The day concluded with the Law Society’s official Opening of the Legal Year ceremony.
