UIA deplores the death of Federal Prosecutor Alberto Nisman

The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA – International Association of Lawyers) is closely following the ongoing investigations following the suspicious death of the Federal Prosecutor Alberto Nisman in Argentina.

Mr. Nisman was the Special Prosecutor in charge of the inquiry on the 1994 attack on the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA – Argentine Jewish Mutual Aid Association), considered the worst terrorist attack in Argentine’s history.

According to commonly known information, the prosecutor was found dead in his home in Buenos Aires on January 18, 2015. An inquiry for “suspicious death” was initiated, and the justice system is attempting to establish the cause of his death.

The UIA, the oldest institution bringing together lawyers from across the world, is following this case with concern and attention, with the certainty that the Argentine’s justice system shall make all necessary efforts to establish the truth.

The UIA would like to recall, in addition, the obligations incumbent upon the Argentine State with regard to the right of prosecutors to freely exercise their role and with regard to the physical protection which must be guaranteed to prosecutors when their personal safety is threatened due to the performance of their duties1.

In the same way, the UIA places at the disposal of the Republic of Argentine’s justice system’s bodies all the technical resources that, in their view, could contribute professionally to the progress of the inquiry initiated.

The UIA publicly expresses its condolences on the death of Federal Prosecutor Alberto Nisman.

The UIA joined itself to the Silent Walk, organised on 18 February 2015.  See the letter below.
