The UIA Calls on the State of Israel to comply with International Humanitarian Law and Condemns all Violence Against Civilians

Statement of the UIA President - 20 October 2023

The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA – International Association of Lawyers) is deeply appalled that thousands of Palestinians, including women and children, have been injured or killed in Gaza.

International humanitarian law requires that all civilians be protected at all times by all parties in an armed conflict situation. Each party must respect the principles of precaution and proportionality, as well as the prohibition of indiscriminate attacks on civilians. Failure to respect these principles could constitute a war crime.

The UIA demands an impartial and transparent investigation of all breaches of international humanitarian law to hold accountable those who are responsible.
The UIA also urges immediate and continued access to humanitarian aid for the Palestinians in Gaza.

As an advocate of peace and a defender of the Rule of Law since its inception in 1927, the UIA urges the parties to end all violence against civilians and supports the pursuit of diplomatic discussions to reach a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict.
