12th World Day against Death Penalty - "Final Words" project

On the 12th World Day against Death Penalty, the UIA reaffirms its engagement towards abolition of the death penalty and its support to the World Coalition against Death Penalty. In 2014, the World Coalition is drawing attention to people with mental health problems who are at risk of a death sentence or execution.

The UIA invites you to joint its initiative in supporting the "Final Words" project, a haunting collection of the final statements given by the 517 death row inmates executed by the State of Texas since 1982. This book is an undeniable testament to the humanity at the center of the death penalty raising questions about this systematic and dehumanizing practice of state-sanctioned death. It has been featured in Le Monde: "Voix d’outre-tombe"

The NY Times Lens Blog covered the creative campaign "Selfies against the Death Penalty", which is part of the Final Word Project, and was initiated by the photographer Marc Asnin who will be attending the UIA Congress in Florence to present this project.
