The Human Rights Commission works on the fundamental norms and possible proceedings that can be used by lawyers, on basis of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention of Human Rights or any other international or regional document or convention.
The Commission aims to give lawyers the opportunity of examining and discussing different instruments related to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, in particular with respect to human dignity, fair process, medias and communications.
The Commission examines also basic topics such as rights of detainees, protection against torture, freedom of expression, abolishing death penalty, women’s rights, children’s rights, rights of victims of trafficking in human beings, refugees and forced migration.
In its session during the annual congress, the Commission tackles burning issues such as rights of detained persons (Istanbul), freedom of expression (Miami), secrecy and justice (Dresden), protection of human rights in work contracts (Macau), the right to legal asistance and the effective exercice of defence rights around the world (Florence), human rights in the face of transnational organised crime (Valencia), the right of victims of terrorist attacks to compensation (Budapest) and human rights in the face of realities (Toronto).
The Commission follows up closely the development of jurisprudence in the field of human rights, mainly that of the European Court of Human Rights, and organizes, regularly, seminars in this regard in order to discuss questions related to proceedings as well as the latest decisions and their impact.
The Commission brings together lawyers from all countries who, through debates and discussions with other members and regional councels of the Commission, benefit of a multinational, comparative and updated approach to human rights, enriched with the specificities of national judicial systems.
