Human Rights and Protection of Lawyers

The President of the Istanbul Bar Association, Ümit Kocasakal, as well as the 9 Bar Council's members have been acquitted

The UIA is very pleased with their acquittal.

As a reminder, proceedings had been brought against the Bar President and Bar Council members for "attempting to influence the proceedings" of the trial. They had been accused of having defended in front of the magistrates, in accordance with their prerogatives, the right to a fair trial that respected the defence of defendants whose counsel had left the hearing, having deemed that they were not in a condition to correctly pursue the defence of the accused. The UIA, represented by its former president, Corrado de Martini, had closely followed all the hearings held in this case.

UIA wishes to recall that several lawyers still remain imprisoned and that cases have been filed against them in Turkey for events directly related to the defence of their clients. The UIA shall continue to closely follow the proceedings underway and to support the lawyers who are on trial.

The UIA appeals to the profession to continue to keep a close eye on this situation.
