The Agri-Food Law Commission unites international lawyers with experience in providing practical legal advice to businesses operating in the food and agriculture sector.

Agri-food law affects essential human needs and values, such as food security, food safety and a healthy environment. It covers a complex and dynamic set of laws, regulations and principles established at the international, EU and national level. It is one of the fastest growing and developing areas of law, with the “black swans” of pandemic and conflict, combined with the negative effects of climate change, adding to the growing complexity of this specialized field of law in recent years.

Novel foods, transitioning to a sustainable food system, technology and AI in agricultural production, food quality and safety controls, ecological food production, packaging, environmental and health claims made in relation to food products, unfair practices in the agri-food supply chain, disruptions in the international food supply chain – these are just some examples of the issues that the Commission deals with.

The Commission’s goal is to integrate all UIA lawyers interested in agri-food law. We work together to promote collaboration and the exchange of knowledge and experience between the Commission’s members. We meet regularly to discuss recent developments and trends on the agri-food market. This enables us to engage in interesting projects for a wide range of clients, active at different stages of the agri-food chain, from feed and food production, through food processing, storage, retail and distribution and marketing.

Due to the wide variety of legal issues affecting the agri-food industry, including health, environment, IP and international sale of goods – just to name a few – we are open to cooperate with other UIA commissions, both to organize joint seminars and to exchange knowledge and experience.

The Commission encourages all lawyers wishing to share their expertise, exchange their views and increase their knowledge in agricultural and food law to join and participate as an active member of our Commission!
