Message for the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

21 August 2025
Terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, is one of the most serious threats to freedom, democracy, the rule of law, international peace and security, with a devastating impact on individuals, their families and friends, and communities around the world.

Acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, whatever their motives, whenever and by whomever they are committed. They create a wave of unimaginable grief.

The UN General Assembly, in its resolution 72/165 (2017), proclaimed 21 August as the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. The main focus of the International Day is to honour, remember and pay tribute to the victims of terrorism by standing in solidarity with them and promoting and protecting their human rights and fundamental freedoms. The International Day seeks to inspire collective action and empower individuals and communities to work towards a future defined by peace, solidarity, and resilience. The International Day is both a tribute and a call to action, honoring victims’ resilience and leadership.

Through remembrance and tribute, we restore dignity, build solidarity, and promote justice.

The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA) pays tribute to those who lost their lives in terrorist attacks and stands in solidarity with victims survived the tragic attacks who – as indicated by the United Nations - show incredible courage and resilience as they “learn how to live again”, often with the help of their families, friends and communities.

UIA highlights the importance of combating terrorism and the financing of terrorism as well as the crucial role of the cooperation between public and private sectors (often referred to as Public-Private Partnerships-PPPs) in this fight during its events (e.g. in 2025, among other things, in the New Delhi seminar , in the London Business Law Forum  and in the next Guadalajara Congress ) and through its publications .

Together, we can build more peaceful and resilient societies for a better future for us all and ensure that the lives taken and changed by terrorism are never forgotten.
