UIA STATEMENT ON THE ATTACK ON IRAN
The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA – International Association of Lawyers) expresses its utmost concern following the attack on Iran, which undermines the fundamental principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, including the duty of States to settle international disputes by peaceful means, and the ban of the use of armed force in international relations, except in the specific circumstances and in accordance with the procedures expressly established in the Charter.
Whilst the UIA firmly condemns the repeated serious violations of the rule of law and of human rights perpetrated by the authorities in Iran, particularly to the detriment of women, it reiterates that such violations must be addressed in full compliance with international law.
It is of additional grave concern that the conflict is escalating across the region, with civilians being particularly affected by the consequences of hostilities.
The UIA confirms that the preservation of a rule-based international legal order remains a priority, and that this order demands that all international actors operate under restraint and prudence in their pursuit of peace and security.
Accordingly, the UIA joins the Secretary General António Guterres in calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation, encouraging all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table, and reiterates that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law (art 33.1 of the UN Charter).
The UIA will continue to actively monitor the situation.
