Message for the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism
Terrorism, in all its forms and tactics, targets the very foundations of our societies and directly challenges our shared values of peace, justice, and human dignity. It aims to dismantle human rights, fundamental freedoms, and democracy. It threatens the territorial integrity and security of nations and seeks to destabilize legitimate governments.
The act of terrorism has a devastating effect on people. Each year, thousands of innocent lives are shattered by terrorist attacks. Victims and survivors of terrorism bear a heavy burden in the wake of terrorist violence and destruction.
In its resolution 72/165 (2017), the UN General Assembly, established the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism (“International Day”) to be commemorated annually on 21 August, in order to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The International Day stands as a solemn reminder that terrorism continues to be one of the most serious threats to international peace, security and the well-being of women, men and children, and serves to honour victims and survivors, elevate their voices, raise awareness, and highlight global solidarity.
Survivors’ voices are integral to shaping policy and driving change to prevent terrorist attacks. They contribute to narratives of peacebuilding as advocates of peace and humanize the impact of terrorism.
By keeping the memories of victims alive and amplifying the voices of survivors, the global community stands together against terrorism, ensuring that its victims are never forgotten.
Moreover, the International Day serves both as a tribute and a call to action. It honours the courage, resilience and leadership of victims and survivors while encouraging UN Member States, international organizations, civil society, educators, media professionals, and technology companies to promote responsible approaches to remembrance that uphold victims’ rights and contribute to healing and prevention.
On this International Day, the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA) pays tribute to those whose lives were stolen by terrorism and stands in solidarity with those who continue to live with the pain, loss, and trauma. UIA also pays tribute to those who help support the victims of terrorism, from first responders to law enforcement and the dedicated institutions, professionals, and associations, who provide long-term assistance and care.
“United by hope, we can build a future free from terrorism, where all people live in dignity and without fear” (António Guterres, UN Secretary-General).
