MEDIATION AND CONFLICT PREVENTION

The UIA Mediation and Conflict Prevention Commission, established in 1998, is dedicated to promoting mediation and other amicable dispute resolution methods. Since its creation, it has successively been chaired by Thierry Garby, Marie-Anne Bastin, Helena De Backer, Georges Feghali, Thomas Gaultier and Lotfi El Ajeri. It is currently chaired by David Lutran.

The Commission is distinguished by its open, multicultural and multilingual identity, reflecting the UIA and the diversity of its members. It is both expert-driven and professionally oriented, providing a forum for exchange, reflection and professional development in the fields of mediation and conflict prevention. Deeply committed and actively engaged, it fosters a collaborative dynamic among practitioners from diverse legal backgrounds and cultures. Through the quality of its work, the richness of its exchanges and the ambition of its initiatives, it aims to offer its members a framework for reflection and cooperation of the highest standard.

The Commission actively contributes to the development of mediation by carrying out awareness-raising initiatives, organizing dedicated events and encouraging exchanges among its members. It also promotes interaction with the other UIA commissions, in a spirit of openness, dialogue and the dissemination of best practices in the prevention and amicable resolution of disputes.

The Commission is actively engaged in a compelling and unifying topic within the UIA, as evidenced by the Declaration on the Role of Lawyers in the Prevention and Resolution of Conflicts, adopted at the General Assembly on 29 October 2025.

The Commission is organized around an Executive Committee and regional representatives.
