3rd Regional Congress Against the Death Penalty – April 9-10, 2018 – Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire

 

The UIA invites you to participate in the upcoming Regional Congress Against the Death Penalty to be held on April 9-10, 2018 at Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

This 3rd Regional Congress is organised by ECPM (Ensemble contre la peine de mort) in partnership with Cote d’Ivoire CNDH (National Human Rights Commission), FIACAT and the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.

The Congress will aim to:

- Encourage commitment from political leaders in target countries

- Encourage abolition of the death penalty in certain countries with a moratorium in place

- Support the establishment of three key international instruments

- Encourage dialogue, collective action and the emergence of initiatives by actors from civil society, parliamentarians and NHRIs in the region

- Identify the main issues facing the region and develop arguments in support of abolition

- Prepare the 2018 World Day (10 October) focusing on the conditions of detention of prisoners sentenced to death.
 

Subjects such as “Death penalty, poverty and prison conditions “;“Death penalty, a colonial heritage?”, and “Death penalty, a political tool?” will be examined. A special panel will be dedicated to the effective legal representation of persons facing the death penalty.

The UIA, which has a long-standing commitment to abolish the death penalty, will be represented at this major regional event. Join the UIA and contribute to the abolition of the death penalty in Africa.
