Human Rights and Protection of lawyers

The UIA pays special attention to the protection of human rights and the defence of their universal nature.

It works actively to protect the right of all lawyers to be able to practise their profession with full freedom and independence, without any hindrance, intimidation, harassment or interference in their professional duties.

Finally, the UIA closely follows developments in international criminal justice through its status as member of the Advisory Panel within the two International Criminal Tribunals and its participation to the work of the International Criminal Court.

This website presents UIA’s most recent activities in the field of human rights, the protection of legal professionals and international criminal law.

Re-arrest of 2014 Ludovic Trarieux Human Rights Prize Winner Mahienour El-Massry

The UIA deplores the situation of Human Rights Lawyer and 2014 Ludovic Trarieux Prize recipient, Mahienour El-Massry who has been re-arrested on Monday, May 11.

The order for arrest was delivered by the Alexandria Court during the appeal of the case in which Ms. El-Massry, Mr. Youssef Shaban, Mr. Mohamed Ramadan, Mr. Loay Mohamed Abdel Rahman and eight other activists were sentenced last February to two years in prison

The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA - International Association of Lawyers) strongly condemned the recent arrests of a large number of human rights lawyers, law firm staff and activists as part of an unprecedented crackdown by Chinese authorities.

Intervention in support of the Croatian Bar Association

On March 23, 2015, Lawyer Vlatko Vidakovic was shot down by one of his former clients in his office at Osijek, Croatia. This case seems not to be an isolated one, and according to information provided by the Croatian Bar Association, nine lawyers and one legal trainee have been killed in Croatia since 1972 under similar circumstances. During the same period, 15 lawyers have been subject to physical attacks, including having explosive devices planted in their premises, fires set to their flats and other similar offences.

Bulgarian Lawyer Mr. Ventislav Petrov Tochkov Acquitted


The UIA has been informed that the lawyer, Ventislav Petrov Tochkov, has been discharged by a final ruling of the Supreme Court on August 25, 2015.

Mr. Tochkov had been sentenced to an administrative fine and the payment of damages for defamation on September 18, 2014. The conviction stemmed from comments made by the lawyer in a defence plea in the course of representing his client.

January 23, 2015 – Day of the Endangered Lawyer – UIA's Solidarity with Philippine Lawyers

On January 23, 2015, the International Day of the Endangered Lawyer, lawyers from all over Europe protested in solidarity with Philippine lawyers who are threatened and even killed because they defend the rights of the poorest and work on cases of human rights violations. 

Since 2001, 41 Philippines lawyers has been murdered, nine (22%) of whom were directly involved in handling human rights cases or issues.

L'UIA exige la levée de la suspension professionnelle de Me Nasrin Sotoudeh

Le 18 octobre 2014, le Barreau de Téhéran a annoncé que Me Nasrin Sotoudeh, avocate des droits humains et lauréate du Prix Sakharov en 2012, était interdite d'exercer sa profession d'avocate pendant trois ans. Cette interdiction avait été explicitement demandée au Barreau par la Cour de la Révolution Islamique sur la base de la condamnation de Me Sotoudeh en 2011 pour plusieurs charges y compris « propagande contre le système ».

The UN General Assembly proclaimed  December 10 as Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring attention to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for any inpidual. 

For the UIA, the role of lawyers as defenders of citizens’ rights and freedoms is fundamental in this achievement.

Judicial harassment against Mahienour El-Massry, recipient of the 2014 Ludovic Trarieux Prize

Ms. Mahienour El Massry, recipient of the 2014 Ludovic Trarieux Prize for Human Rights, is still charged with “insulting government employees in the performance of their duties”, “insulting representatives of the authorities” and “attempting to break into a police station” in relation to the events of March 2013, when she had gone to the El-Raml police station in Alexandria, along with four other lawyers, in order to defend demonstrators who had been arrested after clashes between pro- and anti-Morsi Factions.

The UIA Expresses its Support for the Malaysian Bar’s Walk for Peace and Freedom

The UIA is deeply concerned by the large number of violations of the principles of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Malaysia under the Sedition Act of 1948.

 

According to independent experts from the UN Human Rights Council[1], at least 23 persons recently have been charged with sedition for publishing or disseminating information on the Internet or in traditional media.

October 10, 2014: 12th World Day against the Death Penalty

In 2014, the 12th World Day against Death Penalty is drawing attention to people with mental health problems who are at risk of a death sentence or execution.

While opposing the death penalty absolutely, abolitionists and the UIA are also committed to see existing international human rights standards implemented. Among these is the requirement that persons with mental illness or intellectual disabilities should not face the death penalty.
