6th International Colombian Caravana of Jurists - September 1-8, 2018

From 1 to 8 September 2018, 20 international lawyers and human rights experts, from seven countries, were in Colombia for a week to participate in the 6th International Caravana of Jurists. The Caravana is a fact-finding and advocacy mission to protect human rights lawyers and defenders.

“UIA is committed to supporting the legal profession in promoting and upholding the rule of law and human rights. For more than 90 years, UIA has been defending the right of lawyers to practice their profession with full freedom and independence, without intimidation, harassment or interference. It is an honour to support once more the Caravana and, through its work, Colombian human rights lawyers who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to justice and peace” (Pedro Pais de Almeida, UIA President).

It is the fifth time UIA participates in the Caravana. The delegation also hold meetings with regional and federal authorities, and representatives of the diplomatic community as well.

"UIA shares the serious concern expressed by lawyers and human rights defenders regarding the lack of implementation of the juridical instruments related to the Peace Agreement in Colombia, which are necessary to enforce the Rule of Law. Therefore, UIA will continue to closely monitor the situation" (Gustavo Salas Rodríguez, UIA Delegate and Deputy Director of Human Rights and Protection of Lawyers).
