The UIA is signatory with three other major international associations of lawyers (AIJA, CCBE, FBE) of a declaration made on August 27, 2010 in favour of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, sentenced to death by stoning in Iran.
The Jacques Leroy International Prize – Business and Human Rights is a competition for law students under 30 years.
The purpose of this prize is to reward the student who, in writing a dissertation, study or any other research paper, helps raise awareness of human rights in the business world, and thus offers possible solutions to rationalize the societal responsibility of companies from a legal standpoint.

The UIA found out with great sadness that Mrs Joanna Agacka-Indecka, President of the Polish Bar Council, passed away in the recent air crash tragedy that claimed the life of the President of Poland as well as many members of the political and military elite. The Polish Bar Council joined the UIA in 1928, which makes it one the UIA oldest collective member.

The UIA mobilizes in view of the terrible damages caused by the last earthquake in Haiti. During its Executive Committee meeting, held on January 30th, 2010, the UIA called on all Bar and lawyers’ associations to take part in the reconstruction of the Haitian judicial system.
In order to build a global strategy, fifteen organisations will participate to a joint conference organized by the UIA and the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) on June 15, 2010 inParis.
The 11th Réginald Kremer Trophy, organised by the Association Avocats Conseils d’Entreprises (ACE-France or French Corporate Lawyers Association), in partnership with UIA, awarded Mathieu Della Vittoria of the firm, Sullivan & Cromwel LLP in Paris, for the paper she presented on the subject of "La délégation de pouvoir dans les sociétés anonymes (SA) et les sociétés par actions simplifiées (SAS) " before a jury of professionals.
Mary-Daphné Fishelson, the UIA Secretary General, presented the winner with an invitation from the UIA to attend the forthcoming Istanbul congress (and free registration).
The jury also awarded the second and third prize to Olivier Jouffroy from the firm,and Guillaume Fornier from the firm JeantetAssociés.
The UIA defends the respect of legal profession independence, the importance of its role for the promotion of the rule of law, its core values and the subtleties of the client/lawyer relationship. Faithful to its concerns, the UIA comments upon the 2007 OCDE Study on competitive restrictions in legal professions.
The annual congress is the UIA's flagship event, addressed by prominent speakers and drawing the participation of over 1,000 lawyers from more than 70 countries around the world.

The UIA signed a memorandum with Lawasia in order to establish active and dynamic cooperation, both in terms of observation missions for the defence of lawyers, as well as joint activities on issues that are important to the legal community, with one of Asia's most representative associations. The agreement has already taken concrete shape with the organisation of a joint seminar on Sports Law in 2010 and a joint observation mission for the trial of Karpal Singh in Malaysia.
The agreement with ABA-SIL (American Bar Association - Section of International Law), which dates back to November 2006, has recently been renewed with great enthusiasm by both organisations, which can therefore ensure effective exchanges of information and the cross-promotion of their respective events, in accordance with each organisation's membership terms. The UIA and ABA-SIL will now have the opportunity to organise a programme within the framework of each other's annual congress. Increased collaboration in terms of defending the profession's independence and protecting human rights has been set up in order to enhance the impact of any actions taken. The agreement, based on close cooperation between the two organisations' leaders, will help to pursue the UIA's development in the Anglo-American world.
