Call for the release of Dr. Mohammed Al-Roken, Emirati lawyer and former member of the UIA

The UIA invites you to support Dr. Mohammed Al-Roken, by signing an open letter to the Emirati government drafted by the International Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ICJHR) and calling for his release (see below). Dr. Mohammand Al-Roken is a prominent Emirati human rights lawyer, former President of the UAE’s Jurists Association and former member of the UIA. He was arrested as part of a wave of mass arrests that began in March 2012.

Family Law Commission: “Review, oncoming events and this year’s theme at the Budapest Congress: Cohabitation”

1) Members of the Family Law Commission have, in the last couple of months, come together in Capri.  Special thanks should be given to Professor Alfredo Guarino who helped organise a superb conference at the new Town Hall in Anacapri.  There was plentiful discussion about the use of social media to get clients and Brexit and top tips for dealing with difficult clients/opponents.  There were dinners with breath-taking views and a spectacular lunch at Alfredo’s home which culminated in homemade limoncello and gifts of pottery and lemon soap.  It was a very memorable

The UIA condemns attack on grieving lawyers and mourners in Quetta, Pakistan, following murder of former President of Baluchistan Bar Association

The UIA deplores the targeted bombing attack on August 8, 2016 at a hospital in Quetta, in the Baluchistan province of Pakistan, which killed at least 70 people and wounded 112. The attack, for which a Taliban faction has claimed responsibility, targeted a grieving crowd that had gathered to mourn the loss of Bilal Anwar Kasi, the former President of the Baluchistan Bar Association, who had been shot and killed earlier in the day.
