The UIA welcomes the release of the Turkish lawyers Ayşe Acinikli and Ramazan Demir

On September 7, 2016, the Istanbul 14th Heavy Penal Court ordered the release of the lawyers Ayşe Acinikli and Ramazan Demir, after 155 days of pre-trial detention.

A
detailed report on the hearing is available here.

Along with the lawyers Irfan Arasan, Hüseyin Bogatekin, Sefik Çelik, Adem Çalisçi, Tamer Dogan, Mustafa Ruzgar and Ayse Gösterislioglu, Ms. Acinikli and Mr. Demir are charged with violating anti-terrorist laws, while in fact they are being persecuted for their legitimate practice of law and their human rights defence activities.

The UIA has actively supported Ms. Acinikli and Mr. Demir and has repeatedly condemned these arrests, which, apart from being arbitrary, violate defence rights that are enshrined in the international and regional instruments on the protection of human rights that Turkey has ratified.

The next hearing for this case will be on November 22. The UIA will continue to monitor the situation of these lawyers closely.
