On May 13, 2014 the European Court of Justice issued a landmark decision against the search engine Google that enforced the so-called right to be forgotten.   The decision heightened the rift between common law and civil law approaches towards balancing privacy rights on the one hand and freedom of expression rights on the other.  Some view the decision as Orwellian; others as reaffirming the dignity of the individual.  The panel will discuss these and other concepts and applications deriving from the decision.
